Pelato

At 1085 Morrison sits my new favorite Italian spot—Pelato. An authentic, Brooklyn style Italian place, tucked in by Lewis BBQ and Edmund’s Oast with a fantastic covered patio and outdoor bar for their waiting area.

Homestyle Italian

Perfect portions of soul warming food

When we sat, the waiters let us know about the portion sizes. Pelato does traditional Italian, tapas style. We loved that we got to try more items on the menu because of this. But with so many delicious sounding options, we decided to order some drinks while we decided.

It felt more than necessary to try their homemade Mozzarella.

It arrived to the table still warm and accompanied by fresh tomatoes, basil and balsamic reduction. The perfect way to welcome in the summer weather Charleston has been experiencing.

Pelato brings everything to your table as it’s ready, so the meal is naturally coursed out. They recommended ordering three or four things for the two of us to share. With so many solid options, we laughed when choosing knowing that we were already planning our next trip in— before even tasting anything.

And they lived up to our hopes and expectations. For the first trip in, we went with some classics that we make at home for some Italian comfort.

Radiatori Vodka

Tomato, cream, Calabrian chili, parmigiano reggiano

Incredible. Hard to single out just one bite; but, the Radiatori Vodka is my must order for each of my visits to come.

The sauce perfectly blanketed the noodles frills, comforting and silky with a little heat on the back. So good it inspired me to start tinkering with my own vodka sauce recipe— one that I have been making almost once a week for the last year or so. My partner is not prepared for how much more frequently I’ll be making it to get it this perfect.

We ordered the vodka sauce as well as their cacio e pepe— wanting to try one that wasn’t red sauce based as well. Bright and sharp, the fresh pepper on the fresh, thick bucatini did not disapoint.

Bucatini Cacio E Pepe

Fresh cracked black pepper, pecorino

Chicken Parm was a staple in my house growing up. It was always one of our favorites that Mom made and seemed to always keep everyone happy. The chicken parmigiana at Pelato does just that. You couldn’t help but smile with every bite.

It was beautifully coated with the breadcrumbs, and moist. Lovingly smothered with cheese on a bed of red sauce. How can you go wrong?

All in all, I am excited to go back to this new Charleston addition. The service and the food were outstanding. Pelato’s tapas style Italian food leaves your stomach and your soul nourished.
