“Walk Softly and Carry a Big Cigar”

An Old Fashioned Teddy

would be proud of…

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Berkshire Bourbon

  • 1 Luxardo Cherry

  • 1/2 Orange Slice

  • 2-3 Dashes Angostura Bitters

  • A Touch of Maple Syrup (Local preferred)

  • Splash Soda Water

  • Smoke

One of the best selling cocktails on my first official cocktail menu as a bar manager. This is a spin on a classic, muddled fruit old fashioned. It’s accessible and will impress anyone you’re making it for… I can’t tell you how many photos or videos were taken when this drink was dropped off at tables— or how many more were ordered after the first of the night went out.

Instructions:

  1. In a rocks glass, place your luxardo cherry, the piece of orange and the maple syrup. (Sweetened to your preference, here we are using the syrup to replace the sweetness you would typically get from a sugar cube— some people like them sweeter than one cube, but you definitely don’t need much of the maple syrup to replace one cube.)

  2. On top of those ingredients, you’re going to add the dashes of bitters and a touch of soda water to help everything dissolve/integrate into the drink.

  3. With a muddler you’re going to mash the fruit, releasing their juice and combining it with the syrup-bitters solution (if you don’t have one you can use the handle of a wooden spoon or something comparable).

  4. Next we will add our 2oz of Bourbon. Originally when I created the drink, I wanted to showcase the local maple syrup paired with a locally made bourbon, but any of your favorite bourbons will do for this recipe.

  5. Finally, we are going to add in some ice (1 big cube, or several smaller ones), and top with a smoker. Light the chips until smoke fills the space between the cocktail and the smoker itself.

  6. Pull up the smoker and enjoy.

To the left is a picture of two smoked bourbons on the rocks, the same method was used to smoke these as in the cocktail above. The smoker on top (or sets similar to) can be found on Amazon for about $14-30, depending on the variety in flavors of wood chips and whether or not it includes the torch. Any lighter/match will work; however these will create the desired level of smoke more efficiently.

Let me know if you enjoyed this cocktail!

Cheers!
